The Rise of Online GP Consultations

More than one million people across south-east England are now contacting their GP online each month, as digital access to primary care continues to grow.

The increase follows the introduction of new NHS contractual requirements last year, which mean every GP practice must offer online consultations for both clinical and administrative requests during core opening hours. In response, NHS England has launched a new GP Online Access campaign to raise awareness of the option.

Online contact more than doubles in a year

The figures show a significant rise in uptake. Across the South East, online submissions have more than doubled in just 12 months — increasing from 540,000 in December 2024 to 1.2 million in December 2025.

Dr Tim Caroe, Director of Primary Care Transformation in the South East, said the campaign is designed to make patients aware they have a choice.

“This is about letting patients know they have a choice about how they get help,” he explained.

More choice for patients

Importantly, traditional routes remain available. Patients can still telephone their surgery or visit in person. However, online forms offer a flexible alternative for those who prefer to get in touch digitally.

For many, the convenience is a major advantage. Submitting a form online can help patients avoid the early morning rush for appointments and the need to wait on hold.

Dr Caroe added that the rise in online clinical submissions shows growing confidence in the system.

“The increase over the past year shows people are becoming more comfortable with this quick and convenient option. We hope even more patients will feel confident using it.”

A practical option for working patients

For full-time workers and those with busy schedules, online access can make a significant difference.

Matt Stacey, from Kent, now uses online forms regularly to contact his GP.

“It was very simple to follow,” he said. “I could take my time to explain exactly how I was feeling, which isn’t always easy over the phone.”

He described submitting a form at around 7am while having breakfast before heading to work. Within a couple of hours, the surgery called to confirm that a doctor had reviewed his request and could see him at 11am the same day.

For patients like Matt, the system offers clarity, convenience and quicker reassurance.

Growing confidence in digital care

The rapid rise in usage suggests that digital access to GP services is becoming an established part of primary care in the region. While not replacing traditional methods, online consultations are increasingly viewed as a practical and efficient alternative.

As awareness grows through the NHS campaign, even more patients may choose to use online forms to access the care they need — quickly, conveniently and at a time that suits them.
