Patients across the Isle of Man are set to benefit from greater flexibility when accessing GP services, following the introduction of a new telephone appointment service.
The scheme is being rolled out after a successful trial at Ramsey Group Practice and will initially be introduced at participating GP practices across the east and west of the island. The first practices began offering the service on Tuesday, 25 August, with additional surgeries expected to join over the following weeks.
The new service aims to make it easier for patients to speak to a qualified GP without always needing to attend their practice in person. Telephone consultations will be available for health concerns that healthcare professionals consider suitable for remote assessment.
How will the service work?
Patients will continue to contact their GP practice in the usual way. Their symptoms and concerns will then be assessed through the practice’s existing triage process.
A healthcare professional will determine the most appropriate type of appointment based on the information provided. This could include a telephone consultation, a face-to-face appointment or another form of care.
Patients are encouraged to provide as much information as possible about their symptoms when contacting their practice. Providing clear and detailed information can help healthcare professionals decide how urgently a patient needs to be seen and whether their concern can be safely managed over the telephone.
For many patients, particularly those who do not require a physical examination, a telephone consultation could offer a quicker and more convenient way of accessing medical advice. It may also be suitable for medication reviews, follow-up appointments and ongoing support, potentially reducing the need for patients to travel to their GP surgery.
Which practices are introducing the service?
The telephone consultation service is already available at Ramsey Group Practice. Several other practices are scheduled to introduce the service during September.
Peel Group Practice is due to begin offering telephone appointments on 28 August, followed by Kensington Group Practice on 4 September and Snaefell Surgery on 9 September.
Finch Hill Medical Centre is expected to join on 11 September, with Palatine Group Practice following on 15 September.
The phased rollout will allow the service to be introduced across participating practices while building on the experience gained during the successful Ramsey pilot.
Face-to-face appointments remain available
While telephone appointments provide an additional option for patients, they will not replace traditional face-to-face GP consultations. If a patient’s symptoms require a physical examination or an in-person assessment, the practice will arrange a face-to-face appointment instead.Patients can also request to be seen in person. However, waiting times may vary depending on the urgency of the patient’s condition, clinical need and appointment availability.
The introduction of telephone GP consultations represents another step towards providing patients on the Isle of Man with more flexible access to primary healthcare. By offering remote consultations where clinically appropriate, the service could help patients receive advice and support more conveniently, while ensuring those who need an in-person assessment continue to receive appropriate care.
